Fun in rehab

I realized i failed to share a little something with rehab. When Chris and I came to visit the Rehab here we went on a tour. The lady brings us to this room with lots of machines and one side is all glass. A room they set up to mimic the outdoors. Complete with recycled tires looking like a road and green part for grass, a side walk beside offices they created to look like a stage of buildings (library, mess hall, etc).  The lady tells us they have all sports someone would want to play.  She asks what sport does Tyler like to play.  We say disc golf she looks at us a little sideways and says, "well, that's one sport we don't have." She said it would be good if she could get one for Tyler's healing. We say we could come up with a portable disc basket.

Well yesterday the PT working with Tyler talks to me about disc golf. Tyler is sharing all kinds of info with her. She asks if we had a disk we could bring him one if it is soft. I look around and think back to the glass that is everywhere and know for sure that Tyler is so strong that he would probably throw a disk and break the glass. Outside his unit is a very ugly patio that Kaitlyn said we could set the basket up, she wants to watch him throw. Put is more like it.  They have no idea how far he can throw or how hard he can throw that crazy disk.

I remember he got a disk that was a crocheted disk.  We have been looking for that disk and needing to get time to get a canvas portable basket to hopefully help with his rehab.  I believe they will allow it to be set up for him to play. So the hunt continues, for a disk he can throw and won't go through the window of his room or the glass doors outside or the glass wall in the "gym".

Tyler is completing 4 hrs of therapy a day. this may not sound like much time of activity but think of this this way. He is working out his body 4 hrs a day and then in between we are pacing the hall ways. He finishes therapy around 3 -4 every day and then is pretty much wore out for the night. Night time is getting better. He is sleeping better and then getting up by 7am. If you know Tyler this is like REALLY early for him. Night time meds are given and then he is in and out of sleep from about 6pm on. He needs as much sleep as possible for the brain to heal.

The last 2 days have been better and his therapy has gone a lot better. He is doing more and they are trying to wear him out. Today we played some air hockey  - He said he won, but I did actually!!! hahaha!!!

My boy is a fighter and I am so thankful God has given us this time to be by his side and spend so much time with Ashley. She is an amazing care giver to our boy. She really could be a nurse!

We have gotten to meet so many people here at Rehab and at the Hospitality house. I hear stories of cancer and stem cell surgeries. Many people at the "house" are there for weeks or months. It's like having a whole new family.  We are all hurting and yet everyone has time to stop and ask how each other is doing. We rejoice when people get to go home and are sad when others cannot. The connections between here and Hickory continue to amaze me.

I will end with this final thought - the lady beside Tyler - Cheryl calls Tyler the "Fresh Prince" she looks forward to him pacing the halls daily. one day he walked in her room and she said he looked like the Fresh Prince. She was calling out last night about 9pm asking where the Fresh Prince was. She missed him pacing the floor last night. Chris was here and wrote it in his notes, Ashley and I were at the Hospitality house and busted out laughing.  I think I will forever call Tyler the Fresh Prince. He probably won't like it but Ashley and I joked we will have to get him a shirt with the Fresh Prince on it.

Who is the fresh prince? We can only think of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Tyler looks nothing like him.

It's these little things that keep us laughing and Thanking the Lord for the gift of our son!
